The residential colony in Hard, built between 1930 and 1949, is a significant part of the influential work of architect Hector Egger. The listed buildings are notable for their economical, material-appropriate architecture and serve as exemplary models of « worker-friendly » housing construction from the post-war period. However, changing social demands have led to increasing vacancies.

The approach taken here values what already exists: parts of the estate are being renovated and restored; where densification occurs, the existing structure is being preserved; and where replacement is unavoidable, a similar architectural style is being adopted.

For example, four two-storey buildings on the first construction site will be replaced by new four-storey buildings. Four new two-storey wooden longhouses will be positioned next to the semi-open courtyards of the second construction site, enhancing the diversity of housing options. All existing buildings will be gently renovated. While certain compromises in comfort must be accepted, preserving the local history offers a greater benefit. Under the name Papelhöfe, this characterful, newly densified ensemble is secured for the future.
